We also saw explosive bullets, which are like the incendiary ammo seen in The Parish. Inject adrenaline and you'll be able bull rush your way through the horde. Imagine that you're making the final rush to the rescue vehicle at the end of the campaign and you're being swarmed by the zombies to the point that you can barely move. Adrenaline injectors work like pills by giving you a health boost, but more importantly they provide a short boost that lets you bulldoze your way through the zombie horde. There are now adrenaline injectors that you can pick up, and they're similar to pills. Valve's Chet Faliszek said that playing a Spitter in Versus mode is "non-stop fun." It all sounds a bit unfair if you're the humans, but we're seeing how Valve is trying to give the survivors a bit more help. But Spitters are also good for splitting up human players, say by preventing the others from reaching a straggler who's in trouble. If all four survivors crowd into a small closet to hold out, all a Spitter needs to do is spit in the room and the survivors have to get out or they'll die. Combined with the Charger (the first special introduced for the game), you can see how Valve is adapting to player tactics. You have to wait for it to dissipate (about 5 to 10 seconds) before you can enter the area safely. When their spit hits the ground it's like napalm a wide swath suddenly lights up and if you walk into it you'll accumulate damage quickly. If you're hit by them you take some damage, but Spitters don't need to hit to be effective. Spitters are area-of-denial specialists they spit a fiery acid attack over long distances.
These are the new special zombies that Valve are revealing, and they're just nasty. Get to the boat! Another new thing that you're going to just love are the Spitters. If they hit you, the screen fills up with mud, making it hard to see what's coming at you. The mud men lurk in the swamp's waters, and, like a shark, they like to get up close before they reveal themselves. Swamp Fever's uncommon common zombies are the mud men. The hazmat zombies of The Parish are fire resistant, so they can run through flames without harm and incendiary bullets don't work on them. However, they do have a unique look and capability that makes them different from the regular horde zombies. Basically, these are zombies that are unique to each campaign they're not special zombies like the Smoker, Hunter, and Boomer. Remember those hazmat zombies that we discussed in our hands-on preview of The Parish campaign? Well, it turns out they're part of the new "uncommon common" zombies in Left 4 Dead 2.
The bad news? These more powerful weapons have limited ammo. The good news is that there's a more powerful, mounted machine gun at your disposal. The finale, meanwhile, is old school Left 4 Dead you have to hold out from a withering zombie assault. You may think you've found shelter, but then the walls disappear and you're in trouble again. Then there's the battle in the shantytown, where the shacks literally fall apart around you due to the weapons fire and the zombies. Those playing smokers are going to have a lot of fun in Versus mode on this level. You move slower when you're in water, and slow is bad when the zombie horde is rushing at you.
For example, there are elevated walkways above the water, but the danger is falling or being pulled off into the water. Not only does it look different from anything we've seen thus far, but it opens up a lot of cool new tactics. YES NO Swamps are a new environment for the series, and they're put to good use here. However, Valve says that testing has shown that the play through for Swamp Fever is about the same duration for five-level campaigns, so you're not being shorted here. Swamp Fever only has four levels, while most L4D and L4D2 campaigns have five levels. This means that you get to have fun wading through waist deep water, battling it out in rickety shantytowns, and making an epic last stand at a giant plantation house in order to escape by boat. While the inhabitants attempted to fortify the enclave to keep the zombie horde out (as well as the government and any outsiders), the defense failed and the place is overrun as the survivors arrive. In Swamp Fever, the four survivors come upon a small enclave hidden deep in the bayou. So read on for plenty of new details, including info on the new special zombie being revealed and more. We also got to play through the entire campaign, whereas only the first two levels are playable at Comic-Con. We were up at the company recently to get one of the very first looks at Swamp Fever, the new campaign that Valve is revealing at the show. Valve is going to be at Comic-Con later this week in order to give the first public hands-on of Left 4 Dead 2, but if you can't make it to San Diego we've got all the details of what Valve's showing, and more.
